Dambulla’s five cave shrines were first used in the 1st century BC and have been in continuous use ever since. Cave 2 has the finest painted ceiling in Sri Lanka – murals covering every surface spanning two millennia of Buddhist devotion. The quality of diffused afternoon light inside the cave entrance creates ideal conditions for interior photography.
